Food Animal Initiative (FAI) was set up by farmers in 1998 in recognition of the fact that commercially robust alternative systems - that significantly raise animal welfare standards, tackle environmental concerns and address issues of human health - can and do exist.
The objectives of FAI are
To develop sustainable farm systems that provide discernable benefits to animal welfare, the environment and human health.
To demonstrate the success of these systems through practical and commercial application.
To breed animals that are fit for their environment.
To supply knowledge to commercial farmers and other interested parties.
About the Farm
FAI took over the tenancy of the Oxford University Farm at Wytham in September 2001. Its 1050 acres (425ha) are bordered by the famous Wytham Woods and the River Thames. About 250 acres was arable land and is now converted to organic pasture producing feed for the animals; the rest is extensive organic grassland managed under the Upper Thames Tributaries Environmentally Sensitive Area Scheme and Countryside Stewardship.
The farm is home to 20,000 free range table birds, 2,000 laying hens, a flock of 1,000 sheep, a 120-cow suckler herd, 500 turkeys and a developmental pig unit.
